Most Memorable Moments of 2015!

What it izz?! Happy New Year World… Hoping each and every one of you had a great holiday season. Special birthday shout out to one of my besties, Jess… Hope you had a fun day 🙂 And while I’m at it…. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL MY FELLOW CAPRICORNS (and Aquarius babies lol). January is always a big month. I know so many ppl with bdays back to back. (My Mommy 🙂 , sisters, niece, nephews, friends & more family!) Here’s to another year of life! :*

So it’s that time of the year again, where I like to run down my fave moments. Only this time, I’ve decided to throw in some random & not so fun facts. Lol Here we go!

My 10 Year Class Reunion – This was awesome. I just knew I had to go back home for this event. You only get one 10 year reunion and I wanted to be there. 🙂 This trip gave me a chance to not only visit with my family & friends, but really catch up with people who played a major role in my childhood & teen years. Boy, did the memories come floating back! Everyone looked the same – just a lil’ older. If that makes sense. Lol I think it’s always important to go to those kinds of events with a positive attitude, and expect to have a good time. Thank You to the student council & all those who made that night possible. Rest in Peace to those we’ve lost along the way and much love & success to you all. One time for Shorewood High School… Class of OH Five! (Shorewood, WI)Class Reunion

Celebrating Halloween – My time had finally come. I put in the effort and the outcome was awesome. I decided I would dress up for Halloween! Lol See I had been slacking in October these past few years. So I planned a gathering (ya’ll know how much I love hosting 🙂 ), decorated my home (I had a field day in Walmart! What an adrenaline rush lol #lame), put on some scary movies, and dressed as the one & only, Selena Quintanilla!

I’ve heard people say that Halloween is the “Devil’s Holiday” and it may be, technically. IDK. I haven’t’ done all of my research. Lol But I do know that I’ve always been the kind of girl who loves being festive, playing games, being competitive, participating in Spirit Week for Homecoming at school, “Wear your Christmas Sweater to Work Day” lol etc. So I’ve always used this holiday as a time to dress up and indulge candy – and I see no harm in that. It’s also a fun time to pay homage to those who inspire us! Thank You Selena 🙂 RIP. Selena

Where Have My Curls Gone? And here goes my bitter rant. I’ll TRY to keep it short. As you all know, I’ve experienced heat damage. Few months ago, my hair was straightened, I washed it weeks later, and my curls were gone 🙁 It’s been about 4 1/2 months since, and I’m more at ease than before. I’m learning how to deal with it. Maybe it was God’s way of getting me to learn about my hair, appreciate it & learn how to take care of it. (I’m trying to find the good in all of this, guys! lol) Really though, I’m doing more reading and finding out basic things I never knew before. I always thought my hair was good & healthy because I’ve always been natural, never used chemicals, and rarely ever went to salons. But there is so much more to healthy hair…Taking care of yourself, managing stress, eating habits, your water intake, harmful sulfates in shampoos, the importance of satin bonnets & pillow cases! The list goes on. I’ve been doing my own hair since K5, guys. Ha! I’ve just always loved styling it. I had never read books or taken advice from a professional. Now I’m educating myself. Hair

Ya know, I guess it’s like having a natural talent, then having to still sharpen your skills. Long story short, I’m fine. Uh. Lol More mindful of what I put in my body … wearing more protective hairstyles, etc. My damage isn’t as bad as some other YouTubers I’ve seen, that have come a long way. So I’m hopeful that this time around, my curls will be healthier! Nooo, I haven’t decided to do a big chop or anything, buut it may be a good time to try something new… ?? 🙂 Hair Collage

Don’t Cry On Christmas – I went home for the holiday & left feeling so grateful. Thank You to everyone who made the time to visit with me. I know how busy schedules can be, esp during the holidays, and I appreciate all the efforts. Still didn’t get to see everyone I wanted to, but I did see the majority of my family. 🙂 We did our first gift exchange. I hadn’t video recorded on Christmas in years! As a child, my mom pulled out the video camera every Christmas and filmed the family opening gifts. It was nice to bring that back. 🙂 I’m an adult now, and forget that as I get older, so does everyone else! Haha. My siblings have kids, and it’s their generation for gifts! Gotta love the little ones, right? 🙂

As I left my mom’s house, I looked back at my youngest nephew standing in the doorway with my mom. Both with the biggest smiles on their faces. I had to walk back up the steps for another hug and kiss, see ya later. (I’m tearing up as I type this 🙁 ). As I got in the car, I began to think about how 5 days wasn’t enough… how Erin was down to ride all over Milwaukee with me (and not complain about how many times she watched my performances at each family member’s house lol)… I thought about how rushing or just feeling rushed takes away from being in the moment. I was so happy to see my family and was just reminded of how blessed I am. It was a reminder to relax and not get so caught up in everything else on life’s “To Do List.” One thing at a time. One day at a time. Be in the moment & don’t forget to enjoy it. Twins

RANDOM FACTS:

  • My eye has been twitching the past few weeks. Stress? Eye strain? Tiredness? IDK. But here I go diagnosing myself again… Maybe I’m on my smart phone and computers/laptops too much. I hate that much of what I do requires me to be online or looking at a screen. Just put the phone down.
  • “Nashville” has become one of my favorite new shows. Yes, I know it’s been on a few years, but I’m just now watching lol. Thank you Queen (my vocal coach) for putting me on to this show! I just finished the first season today and cried. Smh. When did I become such a crier?
  • Not so excited about managing loans, filing taxes & making appointments; but we all know it has to be done. So much more responsibility comes with getting older. Put your Big Girl Panties on.
  • I’ve recently realized & accepted that waiting in certain lines & big crowds gives me anxiety. HA! Seriously, I get an uneasy feeling & stressed just thinking about it… How long will the wait be? Will I lose my spot if I go pee? Will someone accuse me of skipping when I come back, EVEN though the person I came with is still standing there?! … Is it gonna be cold outside? Why does this remind me of waiting for the Milwaukee Transit city bus everyday in the middle of winter? 🙁 … I should have arrived earlier to the concert … OMG I can’t even see the band! … Will someone pop off once they realize I’ve been sneaking my way closer to the stage every five minutes? Annnd scene. (sigh)

Summertime Highlights! – “Rock The Mic” [VIDEO]

Hey World! Hope everyone had good weekend. I had the opportunity to perform at BODL: Battle of the Dance Lines 2015. The comp1etition took place at the Georgia World Congress Center and was filled with families, dancers, dance teams, and talent of all ages! This was my first time ever performing in the Sidney Young Auditorium – I love a BIG stage! It was awesome. Shout out to all of the young dancers: Keep perfecting your crafts! Imagine how great you’re going to be when you become an adult! Lol …I sometimes think about what it would be like now, if I wasn’t so scared to perform in front of others as a child. I waited until I became an adult – at least that’s when I stop letting that fear control me. So it’s always inspiring to see young people follow their passion at a very young age. Okay, now I’m done venting lol…

Juneteenth - Rock the Mic As mentioned in my previous blog, I have NEW performance footage for ya’ll! This past July I performed at the first International Bicycle & Music Festival (IBMF) in Stone Mountain, GA. This event was like a big, fun block party! I did a 15 minute set, and “Rock the Mic” was my closing piece. I had never performed this song in Georgia before. The first time I ever did this song was at Juneteenth in MKE back in 2013! Lol I LOVED the energy exchange on this piece, and couldn’t wait to add this to my live show. Watch us get down below! Don’t forget to subscribe guys 🙂

F! F! F! – The Confident Woman, An Evening of Stars & iPhones!

F! F! F!  …

1. Sooo I locked myself out of my iPhone. I was thinking too much one morning and completely forgot the passcode. Long story short, I had to clear my phone. No contacts. (PS.. If u text me, don’t be mad when I ask, “Who is this?!” lol) #Smh.

2. I had the opportunity to choreograph for a talented group of young ladies! GRAVITY aka G-Force, performed at Atlanta’s Got Talent this month and did a great job. These ladies’ skill & work ethic is beautiful; plus they give 100% every time in rehearsals! Keep it up girls 🙂 Gravity

3. The UNCF An Evening of Stars event was filmed at the Atlanta Civic Center. It was hosted by Anthony Anderson and aired on BET. I had the opportunity to be Photographer of the Day! lol Big thank you to Edward, of Hip Hop U-C-It, for always allowing me to work, learn new things & meet inspiring people on the red carpet. (See more photos & videos on HIPHOPUCIT.com!!! < Click here.) Grace GealeyUNCF

4. I’ve been reading Joyce Meyer’s ‘The Confident Woman Devotional: 365 Daily Inspirations’ and I absolutely love it. It’s just one page a day and I read it in the morning to start my day. She gives a scripture, a story or example to learn from, and a prayer. Every subject is right on time!!! Praise God for confirmation.

5. I performed at this month’s Writing Sessions of America (#WSAATL) at Apache Cafe… Intimate set. Great talent. Smooth night 🙂 I enjoyed ALL of the performances & speakers! Always grateful to be able to do what I love the most & be surrounded by music lovers who take their jobs seriously. 🙂 ApacheWSAATL group

…There you have it! Five Fun Facts 🙂 Until next time, have a great weekend! (Oh, who’s watching the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight?! I guess I’ll be watching with my eyes covered half of the time. I can only take so much violence, guys! Lol I know it’s a sport; but it was hard enough for me to watch Rocky Balboa! haha.) Peace!

My experience at the Singer-Songwriter Retreat! #WSAATL

For the past 2 years I have been a part of Writing Sessions of America ATL. #WSAATL is a national network created for singers and songwriters. I am so happy to be a part of this movement and want to share my experience with you guys!  This past weekend was the Singer-Songwriter Retreat and I took in a lot! Let’s take a stroll, shall we…

Day 1 – VIBE

Marquita and I attended the Icon Award Honors and got to meet a lot of people. Jamie Foster Brown, of Sister to Sister Magazine was one of the honorees that evening. (I shuda got a pic of her nails! They were flawless! lol *sparkling*)

photo 3Brandon

Day 2 – CoCo Studios

What a pleasant surprise… I ran into Brandon Carrillo, guys! Brandon is an accomplished singer/songwriter himself. For those of you who have been #TeamAshleYYY from the very beginning, you know he performed at the very FIRST AshleYYY Unplugged, back home in Milwaukee! He was one of the writers and composers of “Can’t Believe In You” 🙂 )

photo 5(l to r) Yummy Bingham, Karonna, & Marck Gordon of Levert

Songwriter Seminar- The panelists discussed collaborations, seeking placements, and the importance of being a registered writer. Yummy Bingham, singer/songwriter, shared her experiences as a young girl, what she’s learned being in the music industry all of her life, the importance of humbled beginnings, and not needing a beat to find inspiration.

Two of my favorite quotes: “You can never graduate from studying.” ~Yummy

“Have a ‘no matter what’ attitude. Believe so much in yourself that you’ll spend your last dime.”(Don’t let anybody outwork you!) ~Karonna

photo 5

800 Forrest

Producer Seminar- We learned the difference between a producer and a beat maker, how these guys got their big break, being successful in your craft, and so much more!

Great point: Always stay true to yourself as an artist no matter what sound is trending on mainstream radio.

*Fun Fact: Chris “Deep” Henderson wrote/produced “Happily Ever After” by Case. (Even back in ‘99 I knew I wanted to walk down the aisle to this song!! Lol omg). He also composed/produced “The Greatest Sex” by R. Kelly. (Ya’ll already know how I feel about Robert. 🙂 But this song is one of my favorites. How awesome.)

photo 4

“I be in the club. Standing on the couch! In them Wolf Greys. Like it’s my house – I’M HOME!” ~Miley, 23 – Lol! Singer/Songwriter/Producer, Gordon Chambers, performs his butt off at the Aloft Hotel.

Day 3 – CoCo Studios

photo 1(l to r) Troy, Saleema & Edward

Live Radio Showcase – I had the opportunity to perform and receive immediate feedback from a panel. I was so looking forward to being critiqued! It’s always beneficial to hear honest, constructive criticism from others – especially those who have never seen me perform or heard my music before.

Film|Music|Television Seminar- This was another great panel!

Important points: Think outside the box when it comes to your music being on a larger scale / Allen Johnston: Important to learn how to do things yourself. CoCo: Make a way to do what it is you want. Stay focused. Rashard Partee: Find yourself along the way. You may end up on a different career path. Lisa Cunningham: Research. / “You have to stay ready, so you don’t have to get ready.” / *be careful of VANITY in this industry.* / don’t be scared to “give to get” / Troy Taylor: Remember you are a vessel for God!

photo(l to r) Kevin Shine, Troy Taylor, CoCo, Lisa Cunningham, Allen Johnston, & Rashard Partee

Soul Asylum

Beat Lounge with Rafael Capone – This was a dope workshop –- and a challenge. As a large group, we had to pick ONE producer, one writer & a singer. After the music was picked, we had less than an hour to write. Everybody went off in their own corner to get in their zone. Each round you had to bring ya A game! When time was up, we had to sing the song for the group and then vote for our favorite verse/hook. (This took a while lol) We narrowed it down to 3 groups because of the great lyrical content from the top 3 writers. I wasn’t picked as a songwriter,  but had another opportunity to battle it out against the singers in the room. I was picked, and will now be collaborating with winning songwriter, Ramar! Whoop, whoop! 🙂 Congrats to all of the winners, especially Hugh, the winning producer… Let the games begin!

photo 2(l to r) Ramar, Rafael Capone of Soul Asylum Studios, and my new friend/singer/songwriter Sonia Emore 🙂

Day 4 – Omen Agency

Praise God! After performing Saturday, I was then selected to perform at the Closing Showcase! I utilized my feedback and felt much better about my overall performance this time around. 🙂photo 3 (1)

WOO! That took me forever. Lol Thanks for tuning in guys 🙂 But before you go, check out the flyer below… TONIGHT! I will be performing at Apache Café for the first time, along with some other amazing artists! Thursday, October 23rd, 2014 – 8pm – the last Writing Sessions of the year! Come celebrate with us!
